Broomball: A Unique Ice Sport

Broomball, also known as ball hockey in some contexts, is a team sport that originated in Canada. It is played on an ice rink, but with one major difference from ice hockey: players do not wear skates.

Instead, they use specially designed shoes that provide grip on the ice. Each team consists of five outfield players and a goalkeeper.

The principle is simple: using a specially designed broom, players move the ball around the rink, build attacking plays and try to score in the opposing team’s goal.

But behind this apparent simplicity is a surprisingly demanding sport.

Players need to learn how to maintain their balance on the ice, accelerate, change direction quickly, make accurate passes and anticipate the movements of their teammates. Communication, positioning and trust between team members are essential.

Mixed-gender participation is also an important part of broomball’s identity. In Switzerland, the sport has been played since the 1970s and has developed over the years through various clubs and competitions.

A Swiss Team United by the Same Passion

The Swiss mixed team brings together players from different clubs across the country.

Beyond the matches and training sessions, a genuine team spirit has developed over the years. In a sport where every move depends on the other members of the team, cohesion and trust play an essential role.

Training together, competing together and sharing experiences have allowed the group to develop a strong identity and a true team spirit.

And that teamwork has paid off.

European Champions 2025

In November 2025, the Swiss mixed team travelled to Egna/Neumarkt, Italy, to compete in the European Broomball Championships.

After an excellent run throughout the tournament, Switzerland reached the final and ultimately secured the victory.

It was the team’s first-ever European Championship title in the mixed category.

The victory represented the culmination of many years of work, training and collective commitment.

But, more importantly, it opened the door to a new adventure: the World Championships.

Heading to Whitehorse for the 2026 World Championships

From 3–7 November 2026, the Swiss team will travel to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, to compete in the World Broomball Championships.

The location gives this competition a particularly special meaning.

Canada is considered the birthplace of broomball. For the Swiss team, competing at a World Championship in the sport’s home country therefore represents much more than simply another sporting competition.

It will be an opportunity to meet teams from different continents, experience another dimension of broomball and, above all, represent Switzerland on the international stage.

After reaching the top in Europe, the Swiss team will now have the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the world.

TraveleSIM.ch: Supporting Their Canadian Adventure

For this trip to Canada, TraveleSIM.ch is proud to support the Swiss broomball team.

As a Swiss provider of mobile connectivity for travellers abroad, TraveleSIM.ch is providing the team members with Canada eSIMs, allowing them to stay connected throughout their stay in Whitehorse.

For an international sporting trip, staying connected is particularly important. It allows players to communicate with family and friends, share highlights from the competition, access travel information and stay in touch with their team without having to rely on Wi-Fi.

For TraveleSIM.ch, this partnership also has a special meaning: our goal is to make it easy for travellers to stay connected wherever they are in the world, whether they are travelling for a holiday, business or a sporting adventure.

An Adventure That Goes Beyond Sport

From their first training sessions to the European Championships, and now to the World Championships in Canada, this team’s story is above all about a group of people brought together by the same passion.

In November, the Swiss players will have the opportunity to represent their country thousands of kilometres from home, in the country where broomball originated.

It will be a unique opportunity to experience an international sporting event, meet fellow broomball enthusiasts and introduce a sport that is still relatively unknown in Switzerland to a wider audience.

TraveleSIM.ch is proud to accompany the team on this adventure and wishes them every success in Whitehorse!

Good luck to the entire Swiss team!

Go Switzerland!
