Can I make calls, send SMS or use WhatsApp?

Most plans are data only. Apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime and Telegram work over the data connection.

A data-only plan gives you mobile internet but no local phone number. The plan type is shown in the plan details.

Calls and messages through apps work normally: WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, FaceTime, iMessage, Messenger and similar.
Your own number stays in the phone. You can still receive calls and SMS on it, for example bank codes. Your home operator may charge for this abroad.

Tip: if WhatsApp or iMessage asks to verify your number, keep your home line switched on.
